Selling it or Smelling It?

Selling it or Smelling It?

Pet odors can be a problem when you're in the process of selling your home. If your house has an odor problem, you should remove any offending furniture or carpets or hire a professional to clean them. Be sure to check the cat box frequently and keep the litter fresh.

Since some people have allergies or fears of certain animals, it's a good idea to put dogs or cats outside or confine your pets to one area when your house is being shown. It's hard for buyers to fully appreciate your home through itchy, watery eyes or in between sneezes! Even if the house is exactly what they want, your chances of selling it are less if the scent of Spot lingers in their memory.

Amen to that!  You can't sell it if you can smell it the old realtor phrase goes.

There is nothing more irritating than to open a door and smell the cat litter box.  It's the biggest turn off for buyers.  A clean cat generally means a clean home.

Nakisha,

This is very good advice.  However, you must be aware of how some smells can penetrate further into the house than you might think.  I had a client who was selling a vacant house.  It was freshly painted and had new carpet throughout, but it still smelled of cat.  The smell was in the flooring, but beneath the new carpet.  He should have taken steps to remove the smell before laying the carpet.

Nakisha,

Excellent point.  People should, also, consider how smells can linger in ventilation systems.  It is inexpensive to clean, but well worth it.

Love the title!!  Yup, and some people can't 'smell' their pets.  It's, unfortunately, an odor that becomes familiar.  Like me, and my perfume -- after awhile, I don't smell it anymore, but people will ask "Oh, you smell nice.  What are you wearing?"  People are sensative to smells.  Good points!  And as agents we sometimes have to be very truthful with the message.
